The supreme master of logic, Adi Shankara- the founder of Advaita Vedanta- had to be humbled into the truth of Shakti. Legend tells that while traveling, the brilliant ascetic fell gravely ill and was left completely paralysed, stripped of all physical strength.
When he claimed he lacked the power to even stand, the Divine Mother appeared before him, piercing his cold intellectualism with a radical truth: because he had spent his life preaching a formless, static absolute while dismissing the dynamic Goddess, he now had no Shakti (energy) left to move.
Stunned by this sudden realisation, Shankara fell to his knees in total surrender, watching the universe shift from a cold illusion into the blazing, vibrant reality of the Goddess.
Out of that ecstatic rapture, he penned the opening lines of the Ananda Lahari— declaring that Shiva is only capable of manifesting when united with Shakti- without Her, the masculine is a corpse, incapable of making even a single vibration.
