The “Self” is one of many names for the Soul that are used al interchangeably in esoteric literature. The practice of capitalizing the first letter is a symbolic way of acknowledging the divine aspect of human nature. The intent is to differentiate the inner or higher Self from the outer or lower self—the persona or personality. Ancient Vedic texts made the distinction between Self and notself—between the part of us that is real and immortal, and the part that is unreal and transitory.
