Michael Kewley - The danger of attachment.

Spiritual life is essentially a simple affair. To progress in it means to watch our attachments fall away until we are left with the purity of being.

Selflessness. Ordinary life is just the opposite. Holding onto more and more things. Material objects, favourite possessions, memories, opinions and ideas. Identification with our mind and body. To realise our spiritual potential we must break our attachments. We must give up clinging. However this may sound, it doesn't actually mean we have to give everything away or no longer hold any views or opinions, it means we have to break our attachment to them. We have to see them for what they are. Often we hear it said that ‘Money is the root of all evil’. But this is not correct. The correct expression is, ‘The love of money is the root of all evil’. Money is fine. Money itself is completely neutral. It is our love of money or our attachment to it that causes all the problems. Money, people, life is never the problem. Attachment is the problem. Once we begin to understand attachment and the difficulties it brings we have stepped onto the path of liberation. May all beings be happy.
