Iain Matthew, The Impact of God: Soundings from St. John of the Cross

To share this sense of direction is not to downplay the goodness of the here and now. The world, and humanity, are beautiful; the mission is now; and God is here today. But bridges are for crossing, not just for enjoying. The knowledge that the bridge does connect with the opposite shore is highly relevant for what we are doing on it now. Eternity keeps today's horizons open. 'The first thing a person wants to do when she arrives after a long journey is to set eyes on the one she especially loves.' All the lines of the Christian enterprise converge towards the absolute encounter with the risen Christ.
