A Buddhist mandala from Tibet, 14th century
The mandala depicts a goddess, Jnanadakini, at the center, surrounded by gods, goddesses, and Buddhist lamas. Mandalas are meant to represent some significant part of the universe – or even the cosmos as a whole – using a geometric design to indicate the different layers of existence. They are often used as objects of meditation.
