CHOOSE TO BE FREE

In a game of dice, the rules are there, the coins are there and the reward for the winner is there. These are common to all, and at all times. Yet, how cleverly one plays to win the game, is entirely different. One is free to play any way one wants within this fixed framework. Destiny is like the former, fixed and common to all. But freewill is always beyond the dictates of destiny.

. Like a successful player who abides by the rules and regulations of the game and makes good use of his coins to get the happiness of winning, one‟s freewill is ever independent of the dictates of destiny. The reason being, destiny is bound to time while freewill is ever in the now. And beyond time!

Bhagavan was repeatedly asked about the problem of destiny and freewill, the apparent and eternal opposites. His answer, typically, offers not just a solution, but once and for all dissolves the problem. He said, “Destiny pertains to the body and is indisputable. But find out whether you are the body.” He also said, “Man has only one freewill. That is to choose not to identify with one‟s body.”

We don‟t need to make a Herculean effort to drop the „I am the body‟ idea. In fact, every night during deep sleep, identification with the body drops off naturally and effortlessly. God, out of compassion, has given everyone the experience of both destiny and freewill. He has also given us the freedom of choice to select any one of them. To identify with the body is bondage. Not to identify with it, is eternal freedom.

. To constantly identify with the body is the fate of the common man. A saint or sage is ever free, for he has dropped all identification with his body. Choose to be a saint, a sage. Choose not to be a mere man. This is the essence of freewill. You are ever free to choose to be FREE.
